Body contouring is the reshaping of the body to achieve a more attractive appearance. A patient’s concerns may be related to genetic fat distribution or changes related to pregnancy or following significant weight loss. It is important to understand that body contouring surgery is not a weight loss surgery but rather a shaping procedure. Under most circumstances, an appropriate candidate should be close to their ideal weight. This section relates mostly to contouring procedures of the abdomen and waist. However, many of the same principles are true regarding other areas like the arms and legs.

In considering a patient for body contouring, we assess three things; Skin, Fat and Muscle. When evaluating the skin, we look at the amount and location of skin excess, as well as the elasticity of the skin . In regard to the abdomen, we determine whether the excess skin is isolated to below the belly button or is it also above. We look at the fat distribution.

Finally, we evaluate the muscle to determine if there is a separation of the paired left and right abdominal muscles, which are responsible for the bulge seen after pregnancy(s). No exercise can improve this, only surgical tightening. Based on the patient’s individual physical findings, a treatment plan is made. For instance, if skin is of good quality and not excessive and there is no significant separation of the muscle, liposuction alone can be done. If there is a skin excess, removal of that skin must be included in the plan which is called an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck.

If you would like more details on procedure for body contouring, please continue on. We will fill in detail on the various surgical procedures and add our opinions on each. We will also detail the technique we developed to improve the safety and aesthetics of body contouring that we call progressive tension sutures (PTS) ». This allows us to perform a tummy tuck without the need for drainage tubes.

Multiple surgical techniques and procedures are used for reshaping the body.
