More Americans are choosing to have plastic surgery than ever before. In 2015, there were nearly 16 million cosmetic procedures done in the United States: a 2% increase from the previous year. As the number of surgeries performed increases, likewise the number of patients choosing to have multiple procedures performed at the same time is also increasing.
If you are considering combining two or more cosmetic procedures, here are some important points to consider.
Recovery
Instead of having a separate recovery period for each procedure, your recovery periods will be combined, meaning less overall time away from work, school and the activities you enjoy.
Cost
Many people assume that the cost of having two combined plastic surgery procedures will be less than the cost of having two separate procedures. This may be true. Your surgeon may be able to offer you a reduced price on their services for multiple procedures done on the same day versus the price of these same procedures performed separately.
At some facilities, fees for items such as anesthesiology, the operating room and recovery room will be billed only once even if more than one procedure is performed. So there could be a savings on these items when combining procedures that would not be realized if the surgeries are done separately.
Of course, each patient, surgery, and situation is different. An experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon and their staff will be best able to advise you on the costs of the procedures you are seeking and any savings that might be realized by packaging procedures.
Safety
Even though cosmetic procedures are safer than ever before, there is still some risk with any surgery and the individual’s health history will be the primary determining factor in how much risk is involved. One of the main concerns about combining cosmetic procedures is that this adds to the length of time the patient will be under general anesthesia. Surgeries longer than seven or eight hours have an increased risk of cardiovascular complications. Dr. Pollock will discuss the length of your desired procedures with you and together you can assess the level of risk.
