Chin Augmentation Surgery
Chin augmentation surgery has experienced a surge in popularity in recent years, with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reporting a 71% single year increase in the number of procedures performed from 2010 to 2011. Chin augmentation, or a “chinplant” as it is sometimes called, is a procedure in which a hard silicone implant is placed in the chin to reshape it or give it a little more volume. This can serve to balance out the face and correct abnormalities, resulting in a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.
Candidates for Chin Enlargement
Chin enlargement surgery is designed to reshape the chin to make it more proportionate to the nose. Those who opt for this procedure typically have a recessed or weak chin, resulting in a disproportionate facial appearance while at the same time making the neck look overly fleshy. This operation can help you if your teeth and jaw align properly, but your chin is too round, small, or recessed for your face.
Preparation
Prior to getting chin enlargement surgery, your surgeon will take x-rays of your face in order to determine how best to operate. During your consultation, you’ll schedule a time for the surgery, and your surgeon will give you instructions on how to prepare. This may include avoiding certain foods or supplements that may thin the blood.
The Operation
Chin augmentation surgery typically takes only an hour to complete, and most patients go under general anesthesia. Your surgeon will make an incision either in the skin under your chin or in your mouth, creating a pocket for the implant. Once the implant is inserted and secured, he’ll close up the wound with sutures.
Recovery
You’ll be able to head home soon after surgery, but you’ll want to arrange for someone else to provide transportation. After surgery:
- Expect some pain and discomfort for a few days
- Bandages should be worn for a week
- Sutures will dissolve or be removed after 10 days
- A facial brace might be worn during sleep
Most swelling will go down after 6 weeks and disappear entirely after 3 to 4 months, at which point the final result is achieved.
