Awake plastic surgery offers comparatively inexpensive liposuction, breast enhancement or abdominoplasty in a doctor’s office without general anesthesia. At least one patient said ads for the procedure made her feel that being awake would allow her to retain more control, but critics say the procedure is often performed by doctors with no plastic surgery training and puts patients at risk.
It is “inconceivable that anyone would do such a major procedure under anything less than a light general anesthesia,” said Dr. Michael F. McGuire, a director of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and immediate past president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
