Yesterday (22 June 2011) the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an updated white paper on the safety of silicone gel-filled breast implants. Both of our Dallas board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Harlan Pollock and Dr. Todd A. Pollock, agree with the FDA statement “silicone gel-filled breast implants have a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness when used as labeled.”
The FDA’s position is that women who receive silicone gel-filled breast implants for reconstructive or cosmetic purposes will need to monitor the devices during their lifetime. Annual mammograms with sonograms are the most cost effective evaluation of the implants.
Our practice has made arrangements for a very economical MRI to evaluate the integrity of the implant shell. Please ask us for this information when you contact our office.
