Liposuction was the number one cosmetic procedure in the U.S. in 2023, as patients across the country took advantage of the opportunity to contour their bodies and achieve a slimmer, more sculpted appearance. However, when considering liposuction surgery, one of the biggest concerns patients have is the cost. In this blog, we explain some of the reasons behind the cost of liposuction so you can make informed decisions as you navigate the process.

What Influences the Cost of Liposuction?

The cost of liposuction (or any other cosmetic surgery) is based on several factors. Some of the things that affect liposuction pricing include:

  • Complexity of the procedure
  • The size and number of areas you’ll be addressing with liposuction
  • The time it takes to perform the surgery
  • The geographic location of your surgeon
  • Your surgeon’s training, experience, and expertise

When setting their fee, your surgeon will take into account the factors we mentioned above. In the case of liposuction, the considerations include how much liposuction is necessary to achieve your desired results, the number of areas targeted for treatment, and what type of liposuction technique is used. Your surgeon’s fees may also be higher if pre-existing medical conditions put you at a higher risk for postoperative complications.

Below, we delve deeper into the factors that determine the cost of your liposuction surgery.

Your Surgeon’s Training and Expertise

When deciding to undergo cosmetic surgery, one of the first things you will do is choose a surgeon. During this process, you may discover that liposuction costs vary quite a bit from one surgeon to another. This may seem confusing because it’s all the same procedure, right? It is, but here’s where the training and skill of your surgeon make a difference.

A board-certified plastic surgeon will cost more than a surgeon who is not board certified or advertises only as a cosmetic (rather than plastic) surgeon. Board certification means that your surgeon has undergone specific training in plastic surgery beyond achieving their medical license. To become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), your surgeon must complete a minimum of six years of surgical training, including three years of plastic surgery. They must then pass comprehensive written and oral exams and engage in continuing education yearly. They must also retest every three years and recertify every ten years. If your surgeon is not board certified by the ABPS, they are not board certified.

Dr. Todd Pollock is board certified by the ABPS and an active member of several organizations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

Your Surgeon’s Reputation and Experience

Another factor of your surgeon’s fee is their reputation and experience. For example, a plastic surgeon with a well-established practice and a reputation for providing excellent results can charge higher fees. Additionally, a surgeon specializing in liposuction or body contouring procedures may cost a bit more because of their specialized focus on your chosen procedure.

Dr. Pollock has been practicing plastic surgery for over 25 years and has extensive experience in liposuction and body contouring

Facility Fees

Beyond your surgeon’s fees for their service, there are other costs associated with liposuction. Your surgery must be performed in a hospital or accredited surgical facility, which charges fees for your surgeon to have access to the space, necessary equipment, and support staff utilized during your procedure.

At North Dallas Plastic Surgery, we have our own in-house accredited surgical facility with a highly trained nursing staff and a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Anesthesia Fees

Even though it is less invasive than other aesthetic procedures, liposuction still requires anesthesia, which means you will need the services of an anesthesiologist. Whether your surgery is done using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation, an anesthesiologist must be there to administer the medication and monitor your vitals throughout the procedure. Your anesthesia fees will depend on the length of your procedure and the type of anesthesia used.

Your liposuction procedure at North Dallas Plastic Surgery uses local anesthesia with intravenous sedation, administered by our board-certified anesthesiologist.

Geographical Location

Your surgeon’s fees can also vary because of the location of the surgical practice. If your surgeon is located in a metropolitan or high-cost-of-living area, the number of plastic surgeons in the region and the number of surgeons who offer similar procedures can also influence the cost of your surgery. For example, the price of liposuction in Dallas may be lower than in smaller cities because there are typically more plastic surgeons in larger cities.

Areas You’re Addressing With Liposuction

A significant factor influencing the cost of your liposuction surgery is how many areas you’re addressing and their size. For example, liposuction under your chin will generally cost less than liposuction to trim your waist and flatten your stomach. Not only is the area under your chin smaller than your midsection, but it will take longer to address more than one part of your body. And, areas like your stomach and waist will likely require a higher volume of fat to be removed.
